The short answer: Tertulia Basic is enough for an author who primarily needs a professional website, book pages, a blog, events, reviews, and a way to collect email subscribers. Pro becomes worth considering when you are ready to use direct book sales, full email campaigns, a reader magnet, marketing integrations, or advanced analytics—not simply because it is the higher tier.
I currently pay for Tertulia Basic. I started there deliberately after trying general-purpose website platforms, including Wix and WordPress, because I wanted to learn whether Tertulia’s simpler author-focused setup actually fit my workflow. I plan to upgrade to Pro for its marketing integrations and direct-sales tools, but I have not yet tested those Pro functions. This article separates what I know from using Basic from what Tertulia currently promises on Pro.
How this Tertulia Basic vs Pro comparison was evaluated
Publish Smarter checked Tertulia’s official pricing and feature pages on September 2, 2026. We then compared the plans against six author jobs: establishing a professional home online, displaying a catalog, publishing updates and events, collecting subscribers, marketing to that audience, and selling books directly.
Hands-on status: Basic observations come from paid use. Pro pricing and capabilities are based on Tertulia’s published information. No live Pro checkout, email campaign, integration, or direct ebook delivery has been tested yet. This post will be updated after those tools are used.

What you get with Tertulia Basic
Basic covers the pieces many authors postpone because a general website builder feels like one more technical project. You can create an author site from an ISBN, display unlimited books and series, publish blog posts and events, show reviews, add custom pages, connect a custom domain, collect subscribers, and see basic analytics.
The biggest benefit in my experience is not one flashy feature. It is the reduction in setup friction. The platform is organized around books and authors, so I spend less time figuring out how to force a business template to behave like an author website. My Basic site felt easier to set up and easier to make distinctive than the general builders I had tried.
Basic is likely enough when:
- Your main goal is a polished author home with book and series pages.
- You send newsletters through another provider and only need Tertulia to collect signups.
- You sell through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, or other retailers rather than through your own checkout.
- You want a blog and events page without managing themes or plugins.
- You are still clarifying your marketing process and do not yet know which Pro tools you will use.
What Pro adds
Pro includes everything in Basic, then adds four connected growth tools: direct book sales, email campaigns and newsletters, a reader magnet, and third-party marketing integrations. It also upgrades analytics. Tertulia says direct sales can cover ebooks, audiobooks, and print books and that it takes no per-sale commission; ordinary Stripe processing fees and your own fulfillment costs can still apply.
Pro is more likely to earn its cost when:
- You have a specific reader magnet and welcome path ready to use.
- You intend to send newsletters from Tertulia rather than continue paying for a separate email platform.
- You can legally sell the formats you plan to list and have worked out delivery, taxes, refunds, and support.
- You have enough direct traffic or an audience to make your own checkout useful.
- The named integrations replace manual work you are actually doing today.
If your Kindle ebook is enrolled in KDP Select, remember that Amazon requires the digital edition to remain exclusive to the Kindle Store during its enrollment period. That restriction does not automatically cover print, audio, or other formats, but check the current KDP Select requirements before enabling a direct ebook listing.
The real cost difference
At the annual rates checked for this comparison, Basic is about $95.88 per year and Pro is about $191.88 per year before tax—a difference of roughly $96 annually. The useful question is not whether Pro has twice as many benefits. It is whether its additional tools can save or earn more than about $8 per month for your particular author business.
For example, Pro may make financial sense if it replaces a separate newsletter service, delivers a reader magnet without another subscription, or supports profitable direct sales. It may not be worth upgrading yet if you have no mailing schedule, no direct-sales plan, and very little traffic. Buying capacity before you have a workflow often creates another dashboard rather than more sales.
My upgrade decision
I am planning to move from Basic to Pro because I want to increase my marketing integrations and use Tertulia’s direct ebook and built-in marketing features. I am glad I started on Basic first. It let me decide that I genuinely liked the platform’s simple design and author-specific structure before paying for tools I was not ready to use.
My recommendation for another author is similar: begin with the job you need the website to perform now. Upgrade when you can name the first email campaign, reader magnet, integration, or direct product you will activate—not only because Pro looks more complete on a pricing table.
A five-test upgrade checklist
- Catalog test: confirm every title, edition, cover, retailer link, and series order imported correctly.
- Subscriber test: submit the signup form with a test address and verify the consent language, confirmation, and export path.
- Email test: draft one real newsletter and confirm formatting on desktop and mobile.
- Sales test: map price, file delivery or shipping, taxes, processing fees, refunds, and customer service before accepting an order.
- Integration test: identify the exact app, data, and action each connection will handle. An unused integration has no return.
Tertulia currently starts every plan with a 14-day trial of the Pro features without requiring a credit card. Use those days for these workflow tests rather than spending the entire trial choosing colors.
Tertulia Basic vs Pro verdict
Choose Basic if you need a credible, low-friction author website and are still building traffic or deciding how you will market. Choose Pro when you are prepared to use direct sales, campaigns, a reader magnet, integrations, or advanced analytics in an active workflow.
Neither plan generates an audience by itself. The website becomes valuable when it supports a clear reader path: discover a book, understand why it fits, join your list, attend an event, or buy. Frequently asked questions
Can I build a complete author website on Tertulia Basic?
Yes. Basic includes the author website, book and series listings, blog, events, reviews, custom pages, custom domain support, mailing-list collection, and basic analytics. Pro is not required simply to have a professional public site.
Does Tertulia Basic send newsletters?
Basic can collect subscribers, but Tertulia currently reserves full email campaigns and newsletters for Pro. Compare that workflow with a dedicated provider using our MailerLite vs Kit guide for authors.
Does Tertulia Pro take a percentage of book sales?
Tertulia currently states that it takes no per-sale commission. Standard Stripe processing fees and expenses such as printing, packaging, postage, refunds, and taxes may still reduce the amount you keep.
When should I upgrade to Tertulia Pro?
Upgrade when at least one Pro feature has an immediate job—such as sending your next campaign, delivering a reader magnet, connecting a specific marketing tool, or opening a compliant direct-sales offer. Basic is a sensible place to learn the platform first.
